Scott Roth
Roth grew up in Cleveland, OH and started playing basketball at the age of 10. After a successful prep career at Brecksville HS (Brecksville, OH), he received a full scholarship to play his collegiate ball at the University of Wisconsin. While a Badger, Roth was a two-year captain and won team MVP honors as a senior after averaging 18.6 points per game. Roth is currently ranked 22nd all-time at Wisconsin with 1,156 career points is tied for 8th all-time in field goal percentage. He was drafted in the fourth round by the San Antonio Spurs. Roth played professional ball for a total of 11 years. He played for the Spurs, the Utah Jazz and the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA, as well as overseas in Turkey.
After his playing days were over, Roth spent six years as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks and the Memphis Grizzlies. He then went on to Milwaukee Bucks where worked as their talent scout and assisted the General Manager with day-to-day operations. Roth coached the Dominican Republic National Team in the 2007 Summer FIBA Nationals. He is currently the General Manager and the Head Coach of the NBA-DL Bakersfield Jam.
Roth started Big Stuff Academy six years ago, after he moved to Arizona in 2003. When not coaching the Jam, he lives in Anthem with his wife, Lori, and their daughter, Denae (17). In his free time, Roth enjoys spending time with his family.
Ed Newell
Newell grew up in Hobbs, New Mexico. He received his first basketball at the age of 2 and has loved the game ever since! Newell attended New Mexico Junior College, capturing a spot on the All-WJCAC team in 1985. He set a NMJC school record of most consecutive free throws made, connecting on 47 in a row during the 1984-85 season. Newell then went on to play at Eastern New Mexico University and was named to the Lone Star All-Conference Team in 1987.
Newell has spent time coaching both boy’s and girl’s Big Stuff teams. He has also worked with the Boulder Creek boy’s basketball teams during the summers, helping to create a strong foundation for the high school team.
Newell moved to Arizona in 2001 and currently lives in Anthem with his wife, Kelley, and their children, Lauren (16) and Weston (15). Newell enjoys being a dad, playing golf, serving God, coaching and exercise.
Shawn Harlan
Coach Harlan grew up in Mundelein, IL and started playing basketball at the age of 6 for a local YMCA team. After a standout career at Mundelein HS, Harlan accepted a scholarship to play collegiate ball at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is currently ranked 3rd all-time in free throw percentage (.805) at UIC.
After graduation, Harlan attended the Chicago Bulls training camp in 1996. He was drafted by the Rockford Lightening and played in the CBA in 1996. Harlan continued his professional career playing overseas in France and Spain from 1997-99.
Once back stateside, Harlan developed a program for individual and team training in the north suburbs of Chicago working with over 500 student athletes. Harlan has coached numerous AAU teams and was the assistant boy’s varsity coach for Northridge Prep in Niles, IL from 1999-2002. In 2008-09, he was the assistant coach for the Boulder Creek Lady Jags varsity basketball program.
Harlan moved to Arizona in 2003 and helped start Big Stuff Academy in 2004. He currently lives in Anthem with his wife Lynn, and their four children, Morgan (12), Nathan (7), Payton (5) and Jordan (1). Harlan enjoys having fun with family and friends and golfing.
BIG STUFF COACHES
Theresa Beall
Coach Beall has been playing basketball since the age of 5. She grew up in central Vermont and was a three-sport star in high school. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she had a special love and passion for the sport of basketball and started in the club circuit at the age of 10. Throughout her seven year club career, Beall participated in six national tournaments and three junior national tournaments.
After graduating as the second all-time scorer at Randolph Union High School (Randolph, VT), Beall accepted a full-scholarship to play for the University of Vermont Catamounts. While at Vermont, the Catamounts win-loss record was 102-47 and Beall was a three-year captain. Vermont advanced to the Women’s NCAA tournament in 1999-2000 as an 11 seed, falling to the 6 seed Tulane in the opening round. Two years later, the Cats made the post-season again, advancing to the Elite 8 of the WNIT. She finished her career at Vermont with two America East regular season titles and one America East tournament title. Beall graduated with a BA in Psychology, and a Master of Education.
Beall moved to Arizona in 2004 and started working Big Stuff camps that summer. She began working with the Fury in March of 2008. Beall is also the head coach of the Boulder Creek Lady Jags varsity basketball team. She currently lives in Glendale with her husband Roberto, their daughter Haylee, and their 3 dogs. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family, reading, and enjoying the outdoors.
Tim Dixon
Coach D joins the Big Stuff coaching staff after nine years of collegiate coaching in the Valley. Dixon brings an incredible amount of knowledge to Big Stuff after working for the past two years as an Assistant Coach with Grand Canyon University. Prior to that, Dixon was on the Arizona State University coaching staff as the Sun Devils went on to the NCAA Elite Eight (2006-07). Dixon also spent a combined six seasons as an Assistant at Glendale Community College and Pima Community College respectively. Dixon has also spent the past three seasons working as an advanced scout for various WNBA teams. Coach D knows what it takes to play at the next level and knows what college coaches are looking for. Dixon will be working with the older Big Stuff teams.
Dixon received his M. Ed (Special Education) from Grand Canyon University in 2008 and his BA in Environmental Engineering from Kennedy Western University in 2004. He lives in Anthem with his wife Traci and his three sons Jake, Tanner and Trevor.
